The 9/11 attacks marked a shift in supply chain security, with the introduction of “civilisational terrorism”, where transport has been identified as a possible weak link in the supply chain. Due to this focus on the supply chain since 9/11, Customs and business have, on a global scale undergone major changes to secure international trade against such terror threats. Going forward, this focus will have a major impact on non-compliant traders or traders viewed to be a threat to the supply chain. Such traders could be subjected to harsh consequences due to such non-compliance and this will ultimately have a negative impact on their business.

The upcoming Global Supply Chain Compliance Conference will focus on efforts by WCO members to roll-out SAFE (AEO Programmes) initiatives in compliance to both the new SAFE Framework of Standards and the Revised Kyoto Convention (RKC), particularly the implementation of advance data reporting on inbound shipments (WCO Data Model). It will consider whether these programmes are in line with the twin goals of security and facilitation, or driven by other national interests.

In a first for South Africa, the latest dynamic impacts for all involved in the international Supply Chain are addressed.  INCOTERMS incorporated into numerous international trade agreements change every 10 years.  2010 is not only the year of the World Cup in South Africa, but also the year of the change. As a highlight, Professor Jan Ramberg, Author of INCOTERMS will visit and present the changes in South Africa on his first ever visit.

The conference will also address the impact and empirical analysis of the recent developments which are likely to, and already have had, a significant effect on international trade. It will examine the goals, strategic alignment of risks and business practices that should be adopted by Southern African enterprises to secure our current position and increase our future role and participation in the Global Supply Chain. More information is available through links in the event calendar below.
