On the 29th July 2010, the Commissioner for Customs and Excise, Oupa Magashula, launched the modernisation project at a workshop held at Megawatt Park in Johannesburg. The modernisation concept is primarily designed to align South African Customs with international standards and benchmarks. These standards include compliance which allows for Customs to service the compliant client and to ensure enforcement to non-compliant clients. Modernisation has aligned with version three of the World Customs Organisation’s Customs Data Model and the revised Kyoto Convention. Some of the key modernization initiatives are listed below.

As a prelude to the implementation of the Customs Modernization on 1st Oct 2010, SAAFF & SARS Academy collaborated to launch very successful training sessions on the Customs Modernization. The first two sessions were held & entirely sponsored by SAAFF at the SAAFF offices in Bedfordview on Monday 6th & Tuesday 7th Sept. Tony d’Almeida, SAAFF Director of Vocational Training reported that these events were over subscribed by companies keen to acquire firsthand training by the SARS Academy on the new processes. The same training has been rolled out to Cape Town 8th, Port Elizabeth 9th & Durban 10th Sept this week.

The overwhelming response means a further session will be held at the SAAFF offices in Bedfordview on Sept 15th for training providers & in-house trainers. The invitation has been extended publically to all Industry role-players including the Training Providers in the F&C Industry and has not been limited to SAAFF members exclusively. Training Providers, Clearing & Forwarding Agents , Importers & Exporters have all been represented at the training sessions which included a healthy representation from smaller companies. Further info can be obtained from saaff@saaff.org.za or contact Margy Pedder 011 455 1726.
