SAPICS SCORES - WITH ANOTHER OUTSTANDING CONFERENCE. Delighted delegates have given a unanimous nod of approval following this year’s SAPICS Conference and Exhibition for supply chain and operations management professionals, which wrapped up last week at Sun City. The organizers have announced that attendees rated the 32nd annual event as one of the best ever, with over a thousand delegates in attendance this year.

The SAPICS Conference and Exhibition has gone from strength to strength since the very first conference was organised for 35 delegates in 1975.

This year's conference had special significance, following hot on the heels of the 2010 Soccer World Cup. "Our aim this year was to equip delegates with the skills and knowledge to help them maintain the success and momentum of the World Cup, and reap the rewards of this event long after the last vuvuzela was blown at the final at our magnificent Soccer City. I think we achieved that, and believe delegates left thinking 'ayoba'," Reuben concludes.

At the glittering gala dinner that ended the conference on a festive note, prizes were awarded to outstanding speakers and exhibitors, and competition winners were announced. This year, the Terry Smee Award for the Best Speaker at the Conference was presented to Karl Manrodt of Georgia Southern University in the USA, whose presentation on "Vested Outsourcing" inspired delegates. The South African Breweries Award for the Most Innovative Presentation was this year awarded Abrie de Swardt of IMPERIAL Logistics, for his presentation entitled "Greening Transportation in the Supply Chain". The SAPICS Award for the Best written Paper from a Practitioner was presented to Mark Hunter, of Eskom whose paper addressed “Getting rid of your clutter”. The winner of the exhibitor's award for the Best Stand went to SYSPRO, and SAPICS president Reuben Badana says that this year's exhibition was outstanding, thanks to the huge investment made by the exhibitors in creating an exhibition of value to the delegates.

Reflecting its commitment to investing in the future of the supply chain profession, SAPICS and conference co-host the Supply Chain Council invited students from various higher education institutions to attend the SAPICS conference. For the first time, six students were invited to create poster presentations, which were well-received by delegates. "Our students created interesting and professional poster presentations, and we applaud their efforts and are grateful to Volition Consulting Services for their support of this initiative," Reuben said.
