The Consumer Goods Council has through its Logistics SA work group, been tasked to raise awareness, and provide guidance and best practices for one on one interventions as well as at strategic industry level concern surrounding the operational inefficiencies that add to the cost of doing business in South Africa. To this end, the first of three logistics meetings was held in CT with great success in mid-Feb. The second meeting will be in Durban on the 16th March (Link provided below) and the final meeting will be in Johannesburg on the 20th May at the Pick ‘n Pay Institute. These meetings will focus on the macro and the micro choices confronting the industry. An update on road closures, fan parks and port activity will also be discussed related to the World Cup. (Hazardous Goods are very likely to be prohibited to land/be transported in SA ports during this period. (SARS stakeholder discussion 27th January, 2010) The reality is in the recent World Bank report “Connecting to compete “ : South Africa achieved an incredible 28th place out of 155 countries in a Logistics Performance Index, but to question 22: Export Time and cost, South Africa ranked 111 out of 155. Question 25: Imported Time and Cost, South Africa ranked 114 out of 155. This index can assist countries, supply chain partners and industries identify opportunities and improve their overall logistics performance. The time for a logistics tactical review in FMCG and South Africa is now. See you in Durban or Johannesburg !
