One month into 2010 and there is a distinct improvement in the market.  There is an optimistic energy and excitement in the air.  Companies have a more positive outlook on the year ahead and their strategies reflect these sentiments.  Alternative energy, sustainability, cautionary consumer buying, rising costs and risk management are amongst some of the predicaments facing the industry.  The supply of top talent will continue to be a factor that will impact on all industries for many decades to come.  The skills shortage is only expected to ease in Europe after 2050. 2009 certainly impacted significantly on a company’s hiring decisions.  Often, the recruitment process lengthened and decision makers were faced with tighter policies and recruitment procedures. The talent pool became uncertain and the supply shifted.

Competition for labour increased significantly and the risk tolerant candidates were faced with more options.Interestingly, Tech-Pro’s salary survey reflected very little change in salaries during 2009. Our 2010 Salary Survery is currently underway. 2009 saw many projects being put on hold until the financial markets strengthen sufficiently to restore consumer confidence.  2010 has seen many projects being revived and the project book values are on the rise.  This has led to the expansion in many supply chain management teams and the demand in the top supply chain management talent has boomed during the last month.  2010 has kicked off with a steep rise in demand for talent.
There is also a very clear indication that talent with strong business development skills with the ability to provide creative solutions to a client’s supply chain are in high demand. Candidates with experience in supplier relationship management where the negotiating skills go beyond pricing are also in high demand.
There are a variety of sectors booming in terms of their recruitment needs and this is very exciting to see so early on in the year.  Whilst the first quarter of the year is generally characterised with a boom in supply, the demand generally increases towards the second quarter of the year.  The job market is certainly looking very positive and buoyant!

Each year, Tech-Pro Personnel awards the CSCP Bursary valued at R50 000.00 to one outstanding candidate.   Candidates with a Degree and a minimum of two years experience are encouraged to submit a comprehensive CV together with a motivational letter.  Applications are still open until 12th February at 12 noon.  For more information, visit www.tech-pro.co.za or contact Tarryn/Sam on 011 514 0463
